Sick. Been out of commission for the past couple of days. Still have to find Christmas presents for two of my closest friends. Still have to send out some Christmas cards as well. More to come later.

Design Crazy Madness Fun Stuff!™

I'm working on the poster and visual identity for a conference that's going to happen in London next year some time. The conference is called: "Popular Print: Past & Present, Local & Globlal", and my concept for the poster requires examples of popular print.

One trip with Matt to the Wee Book Inn later...

The most lurid, wretched, raunch harlequin possible. We're talking gold embossed brush script typography, excessive pink, and a title unmatched: Prisoner of Passion. So amazingly sweet. Also? A western, a couple of comics (one of which looks like a Harlequin!), some Japanese magazine, and a magazine called True Confessions.

True Confessions has this very pleasant looking woman on the front cover looking placid and oh-so content. This happy, wonderfuly image is surrounded by the following titles:

"I shot my lover - and I'm glad!"
"Did my husband give me AIDS?"
"A sex goddess is after my man"
"Sex with my brother-in-law: that's the only way my husband can keep his job"

And:

"A Virgin's Nightmare: Raped by the football team"

It's utter trash! Wonderful! Anyway, at the Junque Cellar, Matt and I picked up a copy of Popular Electronics (November 1955) and Profitable Hobbies (June 1953). It was while leafing through these two magazines that I found a treasure trove of retro illustrations and hilarity.

And then, I stumbled across a harsh reality: apparently, I'm obsolete. I found this, scanned the entire ad (the version I've put up is only about a 1/4 of the original), and plan on making it into a nice large scale poster. Anyone want one?
Poster went to press this morning. I should be sleeping. Tomorrow (later today, technically) will be a wonderful day of wonderment when I give you more Design Crazy Madness Fun Stuff!

Just a brief one to tide you over until I get some sleep:

My boss loves the poster on the right. So much so, that he told me to submit it to the conference organizers! So there's a very real and possible chance that the printed version will be a beautiful hybrid of the two. Fantastic! Here's hoping...

Super Fun Crazy Poster Design Thing!™

I've been working on a poster for a conference that is being held here at the U of A. I took the project over when I saw the efforts of the English Master's student who was trying to get a poster design done. Anyway, the first is the poster as it is going to press. The second is the coolness that I would have gotten a kick out of sending to press. But it's not going to happen. Any opinons, people? Is postmodernism dead?

Oh Good Lord.

Sarah Slean.

She was the most amazing concert that I have seen this year, without doubt. Sensual. Phenomenal. Energetic. Sexy. Beautiful and delicate. Delightful. I'm astounded. It was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

It was wonderful to speak with her while she signed my ticket and CD liner notes. Her concert made me realize something: I want to touch people with my art, my photography, the same way that she managed to touch me. Art seems so much more noble than design right now.
