About two hours inland (best traveled in the back of a cramped white Fiat, driven by a brilliant but eccentric archaeologist), Matera lies in the deep south of Italy, in the Basilicata region.

The so-called "Sassi di Matera" (meaning "stones of Matera") is the name given to the ancient town which is suspected to be one of the first human settlements in Italy.

Because of the ancient feel and aesthetic of the town, it has been used by film makers as the setting for ancient Jerusalem, including Mel Gibson most recently for his "The Passion of the Christ".
